So, we were given pizza at work last night. Each shift yesterday was shouted pizza from Pizza Hut for not having any LTI's in our factory for the last quarter. An LTI is a Lost Time Injury, a term I hadn't come across until working at General Cable. So basically, we were given pizza because in the last three months, no one in Comms has seriously hurt or maimed themselves, or others. Hmmm... Quite frankly, my primary incentive for not seriously hurting myself is that I don't want to be seriously hurt, not pizza. And it seems like a strange thing to reward. Of course, the fact that our company doesn't use ACC, but has private accident compensation insurance may have something to do with it. Every time anyone at the site has an accident requiring time away from work, the premiums for the insurance probably go up just a little. So as much as the company and management would have the workers believe that they have our best interests at heart, and that worker safety is paramount, no matter what costs to production may come from doing things the safest possible way instead of the quickest, it really comes down to money...
A while back we were given polo shirts with the company logo on them for the same reason. I think that this more tangible reward came from a year of no major accidents. God, this is bullshit... Why the fuck am I writing about this? I'm sure that I had more focussed comments to make on this point, but I've only had three and a half hours sleep in the last two days, and I'm finding it somewhat difficult to concentrate. In fact I'm pretty fucking impressed that I can still type with any degree of accuracy at this point. I think I'm gonna go to bed...
